Message from the Trustees of Pathway to Med - 11/09/24
We are sorry to announce that we have made the difficult decision to disband Pathway to Med.
When we started our work in the summer of 2020, as 2nd year medical students at the time, we found there was a distinct lack of completely free resources and support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who were applying to Medicine. This is where we came in. We were determined to make studying Medicine in the UK more accessible, and I am proud to say that we made a difference.
Now, in 2024, there are fortunately many more organisations that serve the same or similar purposes. Rather than “oversaturate the market”, we have decided to step back as we enter a new chapter in our medical careers and redistribute our own resources and funds to organisations with the same charitable purposes.
We have donated £407 to Melanin Medics, who are a national charity promoting racial diversity in Medicine, widening aspirations and aiding career progression since 2019, and £408.09 to Medics&Me who are also a widening access charity founded in 2020 and are paired to non-selective state schools, providing their students with the resources, skills and knowledge to excel in their application to medical school and beyond.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our volunteers for their hard work over the last 4 years. With your support, we have helped hundreds of students from disadvantaged backgrounds complete their medical school applications and go on to successful university careers. We would also like to thank all the students who took the time to leave us reviews having used our mentors and resources and continued to spread the word - we would not have achieved all of this without you! Our gratitude also goes to all our donors over the years whose generosity has allowed us to fund our endeavors. Finally, we are incredibly grateful for the support of the Healthcare Leadership Academy. We learnt a great deal and met so many inspiring leaders from being part of the HLA:Ideas cohort.

Of course, this doesn’t mean the work for widening access to medicine is done. See Éabha Lynn’s piece in the BMJ, “Widening access is for life, not just for admissions”. She highlights that although a huge amount of work has been done for improving admissions for students from less advantaged backgrounds, support is still needed throughout medical school and in their medical careers. We encourage our supporters who are passionate about widening participation, to find ways to get involved with reducing this barrier in Medicine!
Thank you once again for being a part of our journey and helping us to improve opportunities for all.
